"The ""Our Planet"" began during the lockdown of 2020. It was inspired by the Netflix documentary series Our Planet narrated by David Attenborough. At this time it was not possible for most of us to get out and explore the natural world, the only way to experience it was through our screens. This painting was inspired by the "Coastal Seas" episode and led me to research further into the coral reef ecosystems of the Bahamas. 🦀This painting is based on a study conducted on Rock Sound, Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas investigating the importance of invertebrate herbivores in controlling fleshy macro algae. This algae can take over when a reef ecosystem is out of balance & smothers the coral. In this case the Invertebrate Herbivores stars were magimithrax crabs (King Crab) & Tripneutus Ventricosis (white Sea urchin). Both significant consumers of macro algae which smothers the reef, particularly in warmer ocean temperatures..
